7 DIY Mold Cleanup Mistakes That Spread Mold (and Cost More to Fix)

Most people try to handle mold fast—which makes sense. The problem is, a few common “quick fixes” can spread spores, contaminate clean rooms, and turn a small job into a bigger remediation and demolition project. Here are the biggest mistakes we see in Los Angeles homes and rental units—and what to do instead.

1) Scrubbing mold without containment

Scrubbing drywall or framing can release spores into the air and push contamination into nearby rooms.

Do instead: Isolate the area and use proper containment before disturbing materials.

2) Painting over it

Primer and paint can hide stains, but they don’t remove contaminated material or fix moisture. Mold often returns—worse.

Do instead: Identify the source and remove affected porous materials when needed.

3) Running a fan that blows into the rest of the home

Fans can help drying, but airflow in the wrong direction can spread spores.

Do instead: Control airflow and dry strategically (especially in rentals with shared hallways).

4) Bleach on porous materials

Bleach may lighten surface staining, but it doesn’t reliably fix mold inside drywall, wood, or insulation.

Do instead: Remove and properly dispose of contaminated porous materials when required.

5) Ignoring the moisture source

The mold isn’t the root problem—moisture is.

Do instead: Fix the leak or intrusion first (plumbing, roof, windows, AC, etc.).

6) Leaving wet drywall “to dry out”

If drywall stayed wet long enough, it can become a mold reservoir.

Do instead: Get a professional assessment and remove what can’t be saved.

7) Waiting because it’s “not that bad”

Mold spreads quietly behind walls and under flooring.

Do instead: Address it early—faster, cleaner, usually cheaper.
